About Us

UNSW Built Environment (BE) is one of the largest built environment faculties in Australia and is internationally renowned for its comprehensive range of multidisciplinary degree programs. At BE we focus on the design, construction and management of the 21st century city within the disciplines of Architectural Computing, Architectural Studies, Construction Management and Property, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Planning.

January

  • $5000 annual Nissan Australia Industrial Design Scholarship awarded to Industrial Design student.
  • Planning student, Lauren Kitchen named under-23 National Cycling Time Trial Champion.
  • Architecture student Manus Leung announced student winner of 2010 Boral Design Awards.

February

  • Associate Professor Madeline Lester appointed Member of the Order of Australia for service to the profession of interior design as a practitioner and educator.
  • Industrial Design Student, Luane Rowe wins Cole Classic Ocean Swim in 26min and 13 sec.
  • Ken Maher, esteemed architect, UNSW Alumnus, Professor and Chair of the Faculty's Advisor Council, named one of Sydney's most Influential people by the Sydney Morning Herald’s the (sydney) magazine.
  • Industrial Design PhD student, Ezgi Yilmaz, wins 2010 Creative Vibe Competition.
  • HSC student Daniel Lia awarded UNSW BE Award for Sustainability in Design at this year's Design TECH exhibition.

March

  • UNSW ranked 4th in Australia for Research excellence.
  • City Futures commissioned by Newleaf Communities to conduct  longitudinal study at Bonnyrigg.
  • The ―Longitudinal Study will look at how the neighbourhood-wide redevelopment affects residents in the local community over the long term. City Futures will be setting up a residents panel – the Bonnyrigg Futures Panel – to be at the centre of this important research.
  • ‘Has the Public Lost Faith in the Sydney Planning System?’ article by BE Professor Bill Randolph published in Sydney Morning Herald.
  • Professor Robert Freestone wins Planning Scholarship for Research or Teaching at the 2011 National Awards for Planning Excellence.
  • PhD student, Sanaz Hosseinabadi lunches Solo exhibition (‘Platonic Divine Exhibition’) at Gaffa Gallery.
  • BE in conjunction with the City Futures Research Centre hosted a planning forum ‘The Challenges NSW's Planning System’ with guest speaker David Broyd, Group Manager, Sustainable Planning, Port Stephens Council.

April

  •  2011 Lexcen Sports Scholars recipients include Architecture student, Keller Locke-Sodhi, for achievements in Judo.
  • Miles Park, BE Industrial Design Program Director was part of a team commissioned to design the new Peter Farrell Cup trophy.
  • PG research student, Jennifer Manefield, chosen to represent UNSW at U21 Graduate Research Conference in Malaysia.
  • Sixth UNSW/SEU Joint Design Studio ‘Interposition Exhibition’ displayed in the Red Centre.
  • Former UNSW industrial design student, Toby McInnes, awarded both the Highly Commended and People’s Choice award in the national Powerhouse Museum’s “Bike Rack as Art” design competition.
  • Final year Interior Architecture students work “Visions for Taylor Square Bike Hub” is displayed in Red Centre. Students designed a re-use of Taylor Square as a bike hub for The Urban Interior.

May

  • James Dyson Award finalists announced with four Industrial Design students (out 12 finalists) being put  forward for 2011.
  • BE announces two new scholarships available.
  • Master of Research student, Andrea Wechsler, wins best paper at The First International Postgraduate Conference on Engineering, Designing and Developing the Built Environment for Sustainable Wellbeing.
  • Built Environment Dean's List recognised (see full list in awards ceremony booklet)
  • BE Alumnus Justine Smith's design featured on the ABC program 'New Inventors'.

June

  • BE Scholars Program winners for 2010 acknowledged.
  • Associate Professor Vivienne Milligan appointed Honorary Research Fellow at BE, Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.
  • City Futures, in partnership with Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, won $300,000 tender from Housing NSW for Building Stronger Communities initiative.
  • Built Environment Awards Ceremony was held acknowledging high achievers
  • Two BE industrial design students named as finalists in Electrolux Design Lad 2011.
  • BE student, Eric Chau, went to Silicon Valley as one of the winners in the Clash of the Titans Youth Pitching Competition

July

  • BE Industrial Design student, Joseph Louis Tan, named one of 50 finalists for VIVID awards.
  • BE strongly represented in 2011 Architecture Awards, including awards to Glenn Murcutt, Peter Mould and emerging architect Matt Chan.
  • Industrial Design graduate, Chris Fox, wins a coveted James Dyson Award for the design of his self inflating life jacket.

August

  • City Futures wins tender to lead the major multi‐year project for AHURI (total grant value of $721,000).
  • New prizes and awards announced: New prizes are IntArch - Design Institute of Australia Prize; and $1000 provided by CMP alumnus, Matt Sanders; Cox Richardson's Arch Award to be offered for three more years; Easson Geah's property award boosted by $5000 donation.
  • Professor Sidney Newton one of seven UNSW staff to be recognised by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council for commitment and contributions to teaching.
  • Three BE graduate designers included in the 'Society for Responsible Design Change 11' Sustainable design exhibition.
  • BE staff and students involved in the Emergency Shelter Exhibition to help Japan.
  • BE lecturer, Tom Loveday, named as a finalist for the Blake Prize.

September

  • Boris To  - 2011 prestigious undergraduate Byera Hadley travelling scholarship
  • Matt Chan - UNSW alumni winner 60th anniversary Byera Hadley scholarship and received 2011 Emerging Architects Prize from the NSW Chapter of AIA
  • Yun Fu - NSW Chapter Student Awards, Joint Year 3 Design medal
  • Tom Cole - Graduation Project Hawkesbury Ponds Fairgrounds selected as one of the top 24 graduation projects in the world (2011 Internationa; Archipix)

October

  • The Faculty was heavily involved in the 2011 Sydney Architecture Festival.
  • BE graduate Ricci Bloch was awarded the 2011 Architects Medallion, marking that the third year in a row that a UNSW BE student has received this prestigious accolade.

November

  • This year’s Australian Research Council (ARC) grant outcomes proved highly significant for BE, with three grants awarded to the Faculty and a further two awarded in which BE has a strong role.
  • Built Environment Professors come out on top at National Architecture Awards.  Three luminaries with links to Faculty of Built Environment have been recognised for their work at the Australian Institute of Architects National Architecture awards.
  • Rachel Cogger and Rodney Jensen are the Built Environment winners of the Planning Institute of Australia’s NSW Division Awards for Excellence.
  • BE and the UNSW team led by Professor Deo Prasad,  was successful in winning the CRC for Low Carbon Living. This is a tremendous achievement.  The successful bid has secured $28m from the CRC fund over 7 years.  The program involves several other universities and industry partners.
