2012 Utzon Lecture Series - The Fifth Annual Paul Reid Lecture in Urban Design

On the 14th March, UNSW Built Environment will be hosting the launch of the 2012 Utzon Lecture Series at 6.30pm. This year, the launch of the Utzon Lecture Series is in conjunction with The Fifth Annual Paul Reid Lecture in Urban Design.

Built Environment 2012 Utzon Lecture Series

Built Environment’s Utzon Lecture Series was officially launched in 2010 by Jan Utzon, former UNSW student and son of the renowned Danish architect Jørn Utzon.

Held on a regular basis at the UNSW’s Kensington campus, the Utzon Lecture Series focuses on the presentation and discussion of ideas, issues and perspectives in the design, delivery and management of the built environment.

This year Built Environment will host a series of speakers who are leading contributors of national and international significance.  These speakers include: Richard Johnson MBE, Architect, of Johnson Pilton Walker; Sir Anthony Mason AC KBE QC, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and former UNSW Chancellor; Professor Deo Prasad, international authority on sustainable buildings and cities; Hiroshi Sambuchi, Sambuchi Architects Japan; Oliver Kratzer, National President Design Institute/Managing Director Ideal Industrial and Mark Armstrong, Blue Sky Group; Michael Neuman, Professor Faculty of Built Environment UNSW; Greg Deas, Lend Lease; James Weirick, Professor Faculty of Built Environment UNSW; and Marion Weiss & Michael Manfredi of Weiss Manfredi, the NYC-based multi-disciplinary design practice.

The Master of Urban Development & Design Program has instituted an annual lecture in Urban Design named in honour of Professor Paul Reid (1933-2001), Professor of Architecture at the University of New South Wales, 1985-1998 and foundation member of the academic staff of the MUDD Program.

The Paul Reid Lecture in Urban Design, to be given each year by a distinguished speaker, will present critical aspects of the theory and practice of urban design, with an emphasis on current research in the field.

The 2012 Paul Reid Lecture is titled "Sticks and Stones will Make My Bones: Durability in Design" and given by Professor Michael Neuman, Professor of Sustainable Urbanism.

A brief synopsis of the Lecture:

How do we know when a city is truly sustainable?  Is it even possible for cities in a global age to be so?  How can professional practices retool to be sustainable urbanisms?  Urbanists design forms, traditionally.  Yet in nature as in cities, humans, other species, and ecosystems live, evolve, and adapt through processes.

Understanding processes is a key to design, build and manage the form of the city sustainably. Process knowledge guides everything, from site planning and material selection to constructions methods and assessing sustainability. After all, the active verb “sustain” means to keep a process going over a long time – so it is durable.
