The Future of Industrial Design

Against the backdrop of recent financial turmoil and seismic shifts in technology and geopolitics, an expert panel will explore the future of Industrial Design around three inter-dependent themes.

Strategic Design - encompasses Design in business, Design-led innovation and ‘Design thinking’. If corporations demand the innovation edge will Industrial Design become part of the business DNA and get a permanent seat at the boardroom table?

Crowdsourcing – Since the advent of crowd-sourcing, think Wikipedia, will crowd-funding become the new venture capital? New crowd-source services are creating disruptive but new opportunities for Designers and entrepreneurs. How will Industrial Design take advantage of these trends?

Manufacturing 2.0 -  is moving digital prototyping technologies into the mainstream. Consumers can now design, customise and download products before printing them at home, allowing ‘impossible’ designs to be built. What does this mean for supply chains and the Designers role for manufacturing?

The impact of these trends will be felt in many professions and industries. Is Industrial Design uniquely positioned to take advantage of these trends?
