A UNSW team led by Professor Deo Prasad will host the new Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Low Carbon Living, winning $28 million from the federal government this week.

The CRC brings together key property, planning and policy organisations working with leading Australian researchers from several universities to develop new social, technological and policy tools for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment.

"The CRC will help unlock barriers to cost-effective carbon saving opportunities, empower communities and facilitate the widespread adoption of local renewable energy," says Professor Prasad, Program Director of Sustainable Development in the Faculty of Built Environment.

“This will enable the sector to contribute to Australia’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets while maintaining industry competitiveness and improving quality of life.”

UNSW researchers will also play a key role in CRC for Polymers, which received $14.5 million in funding. It aims to help establish Australia as a leading provider and exporter of products that meet emerging global needs in the areas of health therapies, water and food security and low-cost solar energy.

Announcing the six successful applicants of this year’s CRC selection round, Minister for Innovation Senator Kim Carr said the CRCs are building partnerships between excellent researchers and industry, working collectively for the national benefit.
