July High School Workshops

About our 2017 July High School Workshop series - THIS SERIES HAS CLOSED 

Be sure to register for our upcoming Open Day, 2 September 2017, to visit UNSW Built Environment.

 

UNSW Built Environment invites you to join our free High School Workshop series! These interactive workshops will give you a taste for the undergraduate degrees we offer, what it’s like to be a student here and provide insight into careers you might be considering.

This series is open to Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 students. BYO lunch and morning tea will be provided.

Register to secure your place in our workshops! Places are limited so please ensure you sign up for every workshop you are interested in. There are 7 to choose from.
 
Location
The workshop meeting location is at the Red Centre West Wing Gallery, on the ground floor @ 9:30am. Download a map here.
 
Important Information
Due to safety regulations in some of our fabrication areas, we will not be able to accept students below Year 10. Please bring your student card with you.

Please note - most of these workshops will replicate the same activities as our April series.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Date: Monday 10th July

Time: 9.30am - 3pm

Interested in the outdoors and the way design can make or break the balance between ecosystem health, cultural diversity and social equity? Come and spend a day at UNSW Built Environment working on a landscape architecture project with our experts.

  • Welcome presentation: Knowing Landscape Architecture: overview
  • Doing landscape architecture: stories from students and staff
  • Morning tea (provided)
  • Making landscape architecture: A design exercise on campus
  • Lunch (BYO)
  • Tour of faculty facilities
  • Q&A and a certificate presentation to recognise student participation and wrap up the day

This workshop will be led by the Landscape Architecture student ambassadors.

COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN

Date: Thursday 6th July

Time: 9.30am - 3pm

How does a computational designer use technology for the greater good? Come and spend a day at UNSW Built Environment working on a computational design project with our experts.

  • Welcome presentation: Introduction to Computational Design, careers and our students
  • Design experimentation workshop with essential design tools: Grasshopper and Processing
  • Morning tea (provided)
  • Introduction to key software
  • Lunch (BYO)
  • Tour of our Digital Fabrication Lab
  • Computer design activity
  • Q&A, and a certificate presentation to recognise student participation and wrap up the day

This workshop will be led by Computational student ambassadors.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Date: Tuesday 4th July

Time: 9.30am - 3pm

Do you want to help shape the way we live through the design of sustainable products and systems that we use at home, at work and in the public domain? Come and spend a day at UNSW Built Environment working on an industrial design project with our experts.

  • Welcome presentation: Introduction to Industrial Design, careers and our students
  • Design based problem solving/making activity
  • Morning tea (provided)
  • Tour of faculty facilities, labs and studios
  • Lunch (BYO) 
  • Lighting design-based project: Students will be given a brief explaining the project as well as instructions to help them design their solution. There will then be a presentation of each design proposal.
  • Q&A, and a certificate presentation to recognise student participation and wrap up the day

This workshop will be led by Industrial Design Program staff and student ambassadors.

ALTERNATIVE ADMISSION 

Date: Wednesday 5th July

Time: 9.30am - 12:30pm

Find out more about alternative admission by coming along to the portfolio workshop event designed for Year 11 and Year 12 students.

UNSW Built Environment recognises that your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent may not reflect your potential in creative thinking and making. 

We are pleased to offer you the alternative admission scheme to give you the opportunity to submit a portfolio of your work to support your ATAR.

This workshop will provide you with information, advice and practical skills that will help you design, layout and construct your own portfolio for submission.

  • Portfolio workshop

This workshop will be led by Built Environment student ambassadors.

CITY PLANNING

Date: Friday 7th July

Time: 9.30am - 3pm

Are you planning to positively shape the cities and communities of the future? Come and spend a day at UNSW Built Environment working on a city planning project with our experts.

  • Welcome presentation: Introduction to City Planning, careers and our students
  • Introduction to strategic city planning issues facing Sydney
  • Morning tea (provided)
  • Presentation on how city planners work through public issues
  • Lunch (BYO)
  • Campus planning evaluation workshop and tour of the UNSW campus
  • Q&A, and a certificate presentation to recognise student participation and wrap up the day

This workshop will be led by City Planning student ambassadors.

 

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

Date: Wedsnesday 12th July

Time: 9.30am - 3pm

Would you like the job of understanding what it is like to live, work and think in interior spaces? Come and spend a day at UNSW Built Environment working on an interior architecture project with our experts.

  • Welcome presentation: Introduction to Interior Architecture, the role of an Interior Architect, careers and our students
  • Morning tea (provided)
  • Project phase 1 | Think: Students will be provided with a site, client and brief to generate a small research led proposal. Through guided assistance and feedback, students will be able to experience the iterative process of design thinking through research, manual drawing and traditional model making.
  • Lunch (BYO)
  • Tour of the UNSW campus
  • Project phase 2 | Make: Students will use 3D digital modelling programs to construct their final design iteration and realize it through digital fabrication methods.
  • Project phase 3 | Communicate: Students will present their final design proposals. Parents are welcome.
  • Q&A, and a certificate presentation to recognise student participation and wrap up the day

This workshop will be led by the Interior Architecture Program staff and student ambassadors. 

ARCHITECTURE

Date: Tuesday 11th July 

Time: 9.30am - 3pm

Wondering what it’s like to be an architect who designs sustainable cities? Come and spend a day at UNSW Built Environment working on an architecture project with our experts.

  • Welcome presentation: Introduction to architecture, careers and our students
  • Introduction to tall building architecture
  • Morning tea (provided)
  • Group building tower activity
  • Testing towers and discussion
  • Lunch (BYO)
  • Tour of faculty facilities
  • Q&A, and a certificate presentation to recognise student participation and wrap up the day

This workshop will be led by Architecture student ambassadors.

Transport to UNSW

Buses run regularly from Central Station to UNSW and back. The dedicated express bus is the 891 which leaves from Eddie Avenue at Central Station. Please note this is a prepaid bus, and during the UNSW holidays the express bus operates on a reduced timetable. Alternative services are:
339        Central Station on Foveaux St just east of Elizabeth St.
