Brian Marshall, USA “Before attending UNSW, Brian directed a property development and consultancy firm in the USA. After graduation, he worked with Mirvac in Sydney then with VicUrban in Melbourne as the Development Director for Australia’s largest sustainable master planned community (8,000 homes). Brian is currently in California where he owns a firm focused on the redevelopment of distressed properties. “I chose the UNSW Built Environment (BE) program to gain exposure to international markets and networks. My studies at BE gave me a more sophisticated and well-rounded approach toward property development. The MPD program was one of only a few in Australia and was highly recommended and not to forget, was located in one of the greatest cities in the world. The BE staff were accessible and well connected within the industry. Through them, I was able to work on real-world projects which also exposed me to Australian and international property development professionals and firms.” |

Chewy Chang, MPD, Graduated 2008 “Being already familiar with UNSW, the Faculty and the many aspects of student life and teaching, it was also the strong focus on research and innovation that helped me decide to pursue my Masters degree. The research environment fostered a different way of thinking and students are encouraged to think innovatively to develop solutions to issues or problems. “The MPD program was appealing for its content and was structured in a pragmatic manner that supported both my work and study schedules. The MPD program combines past and proven theory with current thinking and approaches to contemporary issues in the property development process. It was great to listen to guest lecturers, who were often professionals working in the industry, outline key issues, approaches and solutions. “I have been able to gain a better appreciation of the property development process, in particular where various stakeholders work together to deliver a development that positively impacts society whilst meeting regulatory, environmental, social, and profitability needs. The key learning from the program has been useful in the professional roles I have been engaged in both Australia and the U.S. It has also helped to reinforce the experience I have acquired whilst working for real estate developers and clients on consulting engagements. “After completing the MPD program in 2008, I was employed by a U.S. based management consulting firm in San Francisco. It was a fantastic opportunity as I was able to experience a different professional environment as well as undertake travel pursuits. The professional experience was great as the turbulent economic situation provided a backdrop for consulting engagements for commercial property clients with financially distressed property assets. Whilst there were stressful moments and very early conference calls (with most clients based in New York), being immersed in the fast pace was a great learning experience. “Since returning to Australia in 2010, I am now employed at one of Australia’s largest diversified listed property groups, as a Sustainability Manager. “UNSW is a truly international institution, reflected by students from many countries and cultures. It is refreshing to listen to their concepts and approaches in classroom discussions but also outside of the classroom when socialising. The transformation of the main campus over the years has also been amazing and reflects UNSW as an institution that isn’t afraid to embrace change. Plus, knowing that it’s the closest university in Sydney to the beaches is a great thing.” |
