“After comparing the planning based degrees offered in Australia, I asked a local town planner for their advice. This was critical in gaining an industry perspective of the courses offered and confirming my own choice to study at UNSW.

“I was attracted to the BPlan degree because of its industry and academic reputation, breadth of courses offered and inclusion of a work experience year that seemed to provide a practical base to the theory.”

“I choose the UNSW BE planning program as it had the best reputation for urban planning. UNSW has a great big campus, a huge student body and all the perks of campus life that some of the smaller universities do not have.

“Planning was a vocational degree orientated towards getting a good job after study. The compulsory work experience year helped the academic theory ‘make sense’ in an applied way.

“I realised during my study that as a planner I had a very flexible skill set that could be applied in a number of professional roles.  Being a people person I naturally gravitated towards the part of planning that explores how communities are impacted by urban policy change and can be involved in decision making processes.  Now I get to facilitate large community meetings and design innovative and meaningful community consultation processes that give people a voice in planning.
