Message from Helen
There have been a few great wins and many graduation exhibitions to celebrate in the last couple of weeks. Promotions, student awards, new publications and PhD scholarships are among the highlights.
I am especially pleased to announce the success of two more women in the recent promotions round with effect from 1 January 2019. Congratulations to Professors Linda Corkery from Landscape Architecture and Dr Oya Demirbilek from Industrial Design on your recent promotions.
Last week, I was also delighted to officially open the Red Centre gallery, a partnership with PVC Education and Estate Management. The new shared student integrated learning and teaching space provide great new facilities for all students and staff.
Finally, as 2018 is coming to a close, we are holding a Pecha Kucha event on Tuesday 4 December to hear from academics across the Faculty on current research projects. We especially want to hear from those who have recently joined. I look forward to hearing more then.

Funding Announced for Two Major BE Projects
More good news this week, The Hon Alan Tudge MP, Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population, announced the outcomes of round II of the Smart Cities and Suburbs grants. BE was successful in receiving funding for two projects. Congratulations to Nancy Marshall, Kate Bishop, Linda Corkery, Miles Park, Homa Rahmat, Christine Steinmetz, Susan Thompson, Christian Tietz and our industry partner Street Furniture Australia who won a grant of $879,338 for the Georges River Council project, ChillOUT: Smart Social Spaces Creating Connected Green Places and to Chris Pettit, Simone Leon and Jonathan Doig who were awarded $700,000 for their Wollondilly Shire Council Western Sydney Parkland City Sensor Network research project. UNSW URAP Conference Investigates Better Protection for Vulnerable People
World leaders in humanitarian and disaster response representing every continent explored how to better protect vulnerable communities affected by rapid urbanisation, at the inaugural Urban Resilience Asia Pacific 2018 conference hosted by UNSW Sydney. At the conference, The IFRC 2018 World Disasters Report: leaving no one behind was also launched. Well done to all involved, and particularly to Professor David Sanderson, in making this event such a success and an important part of our Grand Challenge on Rapid Urbanisation. Find out more.
BE Publication: Hand & Mind
A new book by BE academics, Xing Ruan and Ainslie Murray, Hand & Mind profiles architectural and design practitioners who are paired with writers to explore their inspiration, the genesis of their projects and problems encountered. This image-rich and strikingly designed book profiles a series of projects from UNSW alumni, staff and students, from Glenn Murcutt and Sam Marshall to Felicity Stewart and Matt Hollenstein. The book brings together projects and critical writing to provide a fascinating insight into the study and practice of architecture. Find out more.
BE PhD Student Award
Congratulations to Fahim Ullah, a PhD candidate, who was awarded Best Student Paper at the 42nd Australasian Universities Building Education Association (AUBEA) 2018 held in Singapore. The paper titled “Investigation of the empirical relation between student sketching, attendance, and performance in construction education” was jointly awarded to Dr Samad Sepasgozar, Fahim’s supervisor. Fahim was also awarded the Outstanding Research Student Award at the 2018 ARC Postgraduate Council Research Supervisor and Student Awards. Find out more.
BE Internationalised Education
Congratulations to the inaugural recipient of the BIA International Professional Placement Travel Grant, Diana Espiritu, a fourth-year Interior Architecture student. Diana will travel to Cambodia to work alongside an Architecture graduate from the Royal University of Fine Arts, Phnom Penh. Thank you to Stubbs Design Tribe for supporting the grant and giving our student a global opportunity. Find out more.
The Red Centre Gallery is Officially Opened
We were joined by UNSW DVC Academic Professor Merlin Crossley, PVC Education Professor Geoff Crisp and colleagues from World Class environments and Estate Management at the official opening of the newly refurbished Red Centre Gallery. The Gallery provides students and staff with a much-needed drop-in space for informal talks, study, presentations, events and of course exhibitions. Find out more.

BE Global Impact
Dr Scott Hawken has recently contributed to a special global report for 2019 prepared by the UN Special Rapporteur, Léo Heller, on the impacts of mega-projects on water and sanitation. Find out more.
BE Scientia PhD Scholarships Announced
Congratulations to all our new Scientia PhD Scholarship winners and their supervisors. BE was successful in securing 7 Scientia PhD scholarships commencing in 2019.
BE Publication: The Ageing of Australian Ethnic Minorities
This new publication by Associate Professor Hoon Han provides a comprehensive view of the quality of life of older people living in Australia from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. The book is based on the lived experience and provides deep insights into the complexity and dynamics of CALD older migrants. Find out more.
