Exploration of Form
The 1st year Computational Design Studio 1 course draws inspiration from Felix Candela’s thin-shell concrete structures to explore and develop parametric definitions of 3D form using Grasshopper software. The model shown is Candela’s Chapel ‘San José Obrero’. Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, constructed in 1959. Using Grasshopper, the chapel’s complex curved geometry has been rationalised into components for digital fabrication. This model is laser-cut from 3mm plywood and features finger joint assembly.
