Dr Nancy Marshall joined UNSW in 2001. Prior to an academic career in Australia, she worked as a private planning consultant in Canada specialising in public involvement, facilitation and specialised research, with a focus on qualitative data management and analysis. Nancy’s time in Canada also saw her gain many years experience as a community development facilitator at the local government level. This role included working with grassroots organisations in an effort to more efficiently and effectively deliver parks, recreation and facilities within communities. The position also involved policy research and plan-making.

Nancy is currently a corporate member of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) and was extensively involved in the Canadian Institute of Planners. Nancy was a national Senior Editor for the journal Plan Canada 1997-2002. She was the Chair and member of the Provincial Planning Education and Practice Review Committee for the Alberta Association, Canadian Institute of Planners 1995-1997 which was the provincial, professional planning accreditation body for CIP. Nancy sat as a member of the quasi-judicial Subdivision and Development Appeal Board for the City of Calgary 1994-1997.
