The effect of facades on outdoor microclimate

Jonathan Fox, under the supervision of Dr Paul Osmond and Professor Alan Peters, is investigating the role of building facades on outdoor microclimate and pedestrian thermal comfort.

As cities become denser, and buildings taller, the significance of facades in surface-atmosphere interactions increases. Geometric and material characteristics of facades strongly influence pedestrian thermal comfort, canyon energy budgets and building energy performance.

Fox’s research, in collaboration with the Co-operative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living, is working towards the development of predictive model that will equip decision makers – planners, architects and government agencies – with quantitative information about the microclimate effects of building design.
