Associate Professor Harry Margalit

Architectural Studies, Architecture, Urban Typologies

PhD; MA (Sydney); BArch (Capetown)

As an architect and historian, I’m interested in creating new perspectives on well-known urban issues. Topics vary, but I always try to create a bigger picture viewpoint in order to reveal something unexpected, novel, enduring or useful. For example, I have studied the history of cities from an energy point of view in order to give a broader context to the current energy debate.

History is an overarching discipline that can be an invaluable tool for being effective in the present. If we are aware of the ways the urban issues we face today have existed historically, we can be more effective because we have a clearer understanding of what does and doesn’t matter.

My teaching has a similar focus in that I help students understand that everything they do has a historical basis. Context and history help students interpret that basis so they can be both proposer, and critic, in their design work.
