Catherine Evans

Senior Lecturer
Landscape Architecture, Urban Typologies

MLArch (UPenn),  AB (Vassar)

As an educator in the built environment, I enjoy inspiring and challenging students to envision a better world and to think critically and creatively about urban landscape design. As the leader of the landscape architecture discipline for several years, I found it highly rewarding to design high-quality educational programs with colleagues from practice and across disciplines.

My overarching concern is the urban landscape and how it shapes our quality of life. I draw on perspectives from art history, urban history, design and heritage practice to inform my approach to education and research. I appreciate future-looking design and am particularly interested in the ways we adapt historic, redundant or polluted urban landscapes to create liveable, sustainable cities.

I am currently researching the politics of park production in the Sydney metropolitan region. My focus is the transformation of post-industrial sites to large urban public parks; I ask, ‘How has the city shaped its parks and how have these parks shaped the city?’

Bio:

Catherine Evans has been teaching at UNSW since 2000.  Prior to her appointment, she worked as a consultant on heritage landscapes in the Sydney area, and as a historical landscape architect with the US National Park Service. She has been the Director of Landscape Architecture from 2015.  Currently she is a member of the Urban Typologies Research Cluster, and was the co-convenor of the BE Sustainable Design and Development Research Cluster for 2.5 years.

Research Activities:

Catherine’s current research is focused on her dissertation in which she is applying an urban political ecology perspective to document the transformation of post-industrial sites in the Sydney metropolitan region.  She is interested in the changing approaches to the planning, provision and design of large urban parks and new frameworks for the design and planning of urban green space.  Questions about sustainable design permeate her research.
