Dr Kate Bishop's principal area of design and research interest is children, youth and environments. She has extensive experience as a design consultant with a particular interest in environments for children with special needs; the design of paediatric and adolescent health care facilities; and participatory methodologies in design and research with children and young people. She holds a PhD from the University of Sydney in Environment-Behaviour research (Topic: The role of the physical environment of hospital settings in children's well-being, from their perspectives); a BA from the University of Sydney (Major: Anthropology)and a BA (Vis) from Sydney College of the Arts (Major: Jewellery and Object Design). She is currently, Senior Lecturer in the Landscape Architecture Program; Director of the Built Environment Interdisciplinary Learning (BEIL) initiative, Faculty of Built Environment; and Convenor of the new interdisciplinary Children and Youth Research Network (CYRN) at UNSW. She is also Co-Chair of the CYE Research Network for EDRA, USA.

Research Activities: 

    Kate is the convenor of the new Children and Youth Research Network (CYRN) at UNSW. The main aim is to establish an interdisciplinary knowledge exchange network at UNSW for those working in the area of children and youth, which functions as both an internal and an external resource for industry, government and community partners.

    ate's own areas of research also reflect her interests in the relationship between people and place. Drawing on the theoretical traditions of environment-behaviour research, Kate explores the relationship between the physical environment and social experience. She has a particular interest in the experience of children and young people and specialises in using participatory qualitative methods.

    Teaching & Supervision: 

    Kate is the Director of the Built Environment Interdisciplinary Learning (BEIL) program. This strategic initiative was introduced in 2012 in recognition of the interdisciplinary nature of professional practice. All senior undergraduate students are required to complete two BEIL courses as part of their undergraduate degrees. Currently BEIL offers 1200 places in 30 courses supplied by all seven undergraduate programs in the Faculty.

    Kate teaches Environmental Psychology based courses in the BEIL program and in the Landscape Architecture Program which currently include: People, Place & Design; Landscape Design for Wellbeing and Children, Youth & Environments. She also teaches LAND1421 and LAND1422, the Thesis Stream for undergraduate students in the Landscape Architecture Program.
