Research Activities:

Current research relates to the application and development of industry standard exchange formats to support all-of-life design, delivery and management of buildings through the maintenance of a full 3D model representation of the design, supported by a shared building information model hosted on an object model server. A particular application of that concept is to support collaborative design processes in the building industry. Jim is currently running a major ARC Linkage grant from July 2007 (worth $630K over 3 years) called UrbanIT, where the aim is to extend the object-based information modelling concept to an urban scale in collaboration with the NSW Dept of Planning, the City of Sydney and Landcom.

Jim is also deeply involved in the UNSW-led bid to establish a Cooperative Research Centre around the theme of Sustainable Living, with precinct information modelling solutions as an enabling technology. Through his industry involvement with buildingSMART, he is also currently working with the Federal Government on a National Initiative to promote the accelerated adoption of BIM across the construction sector in Australia.

Grants:

July 2014 - CRC LCL RP2011: PIM - An Open Digital Information Standard throughout the Urban Development Lifecycle. The overall aim of the PIM project is to develop an open platform for effective sharing of precinct-scale information across all activities that lead to low carbon outcomes. It is based on the recognition that delivering a low carbon built environment is a complex problem that requires collaborative approaches where common information is made available to inform integrated solutions.

2011: CRC for Low Carbon Living. Played a significant role in the development of the successful bid for a 7-year, $100M+ program of industry-led research program with a focus on a multidisciplinary, integrated approach to achieving a low-carbon Australia. Jim's particular focus is the adoption of precinct information modelling technology to support that integrated research approach.

2010: $30,000 - ITIP Faculty Project Grant: “Development of a BE Red Centre IFC Model”.

2010: $100,000 - UNSW Major Equipment & Infrastructure Scheme: “Establishment of an Urban Information Model Server providing data interoperability across a set of database systems to support effective management of urban model data, urban planning and infrastructure research” [RG094219].

July 2007 - June 2008: $9,310 - Ove Arup /ARC Linkage Project Shared Grant / Subcontract: "Delivering Digital Architecture" [RM05518].

ARC Linkage Grant (UrbanIT): begun in 2008, this two-year project involved the development of an object model framework to facilitate the free movement of urban information between the traditional technology of GIS and BIM.

Teaching & Supervision:

After a 30-year teaching career, Jim has now retired from that activity to concentrate on research and the developemnt of local and international standards that support the open sharing of information to facilitate the planning, design and management of the built environment.
