Research Activities:

Alan’s main areas of research concern (1) the impact of planning regulation and taxes on the local economy, and (2) GIS/Planning Support Systems and spatial analysis. Viewed from some perspectives, planning is massive rule-based policy system; like all such systems, it has unintended economic and financial consequences. Most of Alan's research has been focused on teasing out these consequences. He has had his research supported the the US National Science Foundation, the Australian Research Council, various regional banks in the US Federal Reserve System, a range of highly competitive public and private research organizations in Australia, the US and South Africa, and a number of state/provincial and local governments in the US and Canada.

Alan's current research:

The impact of planning on housing prices (ARC)

The impact of transportation on housing prices

The impact of taxes on state and local investent (US NSF)

Land, property and maps - a long history of Anglo planning

Alan's current research (MPhil and PhD) students are working on:

A detailed empirical analysis of the impact of neighbourhood design on the production of urban heat islands

Building facades and the production of urban heat islands

A Planning Support System to distribute projected population growth across Sydney

Measuring the impact of not investing in transport infrastructure

Does higher density result in less CO2 production?

Gender differences and bicycle usage
